Modern and Contemporary Art

Tel Aviv Museum of Art's collection of international modern and contemporary art encompasses works from the middle of the 19th century to the present. It features the harbingers and formative movements of European Modernism, from Impressionism and Post-Impressionism in the latter half of the 19th century, to the avant-garde tendencies of the first decades of the 20th century: Fauvism, Cubism, German Expressionism, different forms of expressive and geometric abstraction, and various styles of Surrealism.
The collection also features various manifestations of art in the second half of the 20th century: European Art Informel and American Abstract Expressionism, prevalent in the 1950s; various forms of concise, reductive abstraction; the return to reality in European Nouveau Réalisme and American Pop Art; conceptual art and Arte Povera of the 1960s; as well as a variety of postmodern and contemporary works informed by the excess, extravagance and eclecticism typical of current art practices.
Highlights in the collection include: twenty four works by Russian avant-garde artist Alexander Archipenko, created from 1908 to 1921; a selection of unique paintings by Marc Chagall; masterpieces by Gustav Klimt and Wassily Kandinsky; works from various periods by Pablo Picasso; notable examples of early American Abstract Expressionism, including works by Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko; and unique works by Roy Lichtenstein, Gerhard Richter, Anish Kapoor, Anselm Kiefer, Ghada Amer, Peter Doig, and Gregor Schneider.
